Slate known as “strongly cleaved”: a real challenge to assemble at a 45° angle.

This order came to me from a customer based on the Île de Ré, who wanted a custom-made black slate basin with a strong natural cleavage. The initial request was for a solid basin, but with this material, that choice would have detracted from the character and nobility of the stone. I therefore suggested a more subtle approach that would respect the material and its identity.
Black split slate is a stone derived from shale, formed millions of years ago by the compression and transformation of sedimentary layers. These layers, called cleavage planes, separate naturally, creating thin, irregular strata with a texture that is both rough and silky. Each plane reflects light differently, offering a play of reliefs and deep nuances.
This cleavage must be allowed to express itself, rather than being concealed: it gives the surface a lively, almost sensual feel that appeals to all the senses.
For this project, each cut was adjusted by hand according to the direction of the split. Each joint was designed in three dimensions—X, Y, and Z—to achieve perfect angles and total visual harmony between the countertop and the basin. The bottom of the basin was then calibrated to the millimeter to ensure perfect flatness and smooth water flow.
With my sixteen years of experience, I always take rigor a step further: each basin is lined on the outside, a rare process that ensures lasting watertightness, resistant to vibrations and movements of the structure over the years. The result: zero after-sales service for six years on this type of project — because detail, here, is not a luxury, it is a guarantee.
Some of my colleagues see me as someone who “goes too far.” Maybe. But my customers sleep soundly, without ever having to call their insurance company for an invisible leak that was discovered too late.
And that, in my opinion, is the greatest reward.
Another exceptional project, in a place where a job well done retains its value.
